GodSon

Biography
  • GodSon was born and raised in south suburban Chicago (Country Club Hills, Park Forest, Harvey)
  • Raised by a single mom; however, my father was still in my life and taught me how to be a man.
  • I was brought up in the church and gave my life to the Lord at an early age, thanks to my grandmother Lenora Hawkins.
  • Throughout my teenage years I distanced myself from the church because I was focused on all the worldly things.  As I got older, my father got more into church and became a real man of God; I looked up to him even more.
  • I really thank God for using my father in that way because it really made me get more serious about my relationship with God and to work towards becoming the great man of God that I was called to be.
  • I always had an ear for music growing up, but didn’t always listen to gospel rap.  I listened to Tupac, Biggie, Nas, Common, Lupe Fiasco…that is just a few.  In the Gospel music arenta, I liked Kirk Franklin, Mary Mary, Donald Lawrence, Fred Hammond, and my all time favorite gospel song, “Never Would Have Made It” by Marvin Sapp.  Around 2010, I also started listening to gospel rappers like Lecrae and Trip Lee, but did not actually start putting the pen to the pad until I started rapping in 2011.  I didn’t get into Gospel rap until 2012. I fought the feeling to do Gospel rap for at least a year because my mind was focused on all the wrong things.  One night I found myself talking to my grandfather and he said to me, “Why aren’t you listing to your calling?”  I knew exactly what he meant and I looked him in the eye and said, “I am.”
  • I prayed to the Lord about it and put away all my desires for the wrong things and realized the Lord blessed me with this talent.  I will praise his name and spread his word throughout the world with my music.  I love the Lord and I love making gospel/ inspirational music because my purpose is to let the youth know that it is ok to praise the Lord’s name no matter what the situation is or no matter what society says about you because God is who you live for, not society.
  • I’m here to make a difference in not just my community, but across the world to reach the non-believers and bring lost souls to the Lord.
  • I pray to be a role model to others in the world, older or younger than me and be a mentor and guide them to the Lord.
  • Like I always say, “I can lead you to water but I can’t make you drink, I can lead you to the Lord and that will make your mind and soul think.”
  • My motivation is the Lord and also my lil’ brother KJ; we are really close. I want him to be proud of his older brother. Also my lil’ brother E.J., who passed away at 7 ½ months old is a motivator because I know he’s one of my guardian angels looking over me.  I want him to smile down one me and be proud as well.
  • My motto is, “God1st, then family, and everything else will follow!!! Be Blessed Not Stressed!!!
